How Your Words Shape Your Life and Success
I’ve been in sales practically all of my life, but what I’m about to share isn’t just for people in “sales”—it’s for anyone who speaks, thinks, or communicates… so basically, all of us.
Language isn’t just about talking. It’s about creating. The words you use—whether you’re saying them out loud or whispering them in your own head—are shaping your results, your relationships, your confidence, and even your health.
In my latest Make Things Happen podcast episode, I’m pulling back the curtain on language patterns: what they are, how they can keep us stuck, and how they can launch us forward. But before you hit play, here’s why this is so powerful—and why it might just change the way you speak from here on out.
The Hidden Power of Words
Think about the conversations you have every day—not just with clients or coworkers, but with your kids, your spouse, your friends, and most importantly, yourself.
Research shows that over 95% of the time, you’re operating from your subconscious mind. That means most of your words, thoughts, and reactions are coming from old programming—patterns you’ve picked up over years, often without even realizing it.
That programming can either move you forward… or keep you stuck.
The Words That Keep You Stuck
Phrases like:
- “I’ll try to get that to you.”
- “I don’t know if I can.”
- “That always happens to me.”
…might seem harmless, but they’re sending a clear message—to yourself and others—that you lack certainty, belief, or expectation of success.
Why “I’ll Try” Is a Problem
When you say, “I’ll try,” you’ve built in an escape hatch. “I don’t know” stops your brain from finding solutions. “It always happens this way” reinforces a negative pattern.
Words carry energy. That energy can either build your momentum or strip it away.
Why This Isn’t About Perfection
I’m not perfect. I’ve caught myself saying things that don’t serve me and had to reframe them on the spot. Even my kids call me out now—because they’ve learned the power of language early. We are each others accountability partners!
This isn’t about never slipping. It’s about awareness. When you become aware of your words, you can change them—and when you change them, you change your results.
Your Words Affect More Than Your Mindset
Negative self-talk doesn’t just make you feel bad—it can cut your performance by up to 60% and spike stress hormones like cortisol. (need to include the Harvard study here that was done, (add THEN add link to that study too for SEO)
Empowering language—like “I’m figuring this out” instead of “I don’t know”—changes your physiology. You feel more confident, resourceful, and energized.
The “Try” Challenge
Start catching yourself when you say “try” and replace it with:
- “I will…”
- “I’m going to…”
- “I’ll do my best…”
Small changes like this have a ripple effect on your confidence and credibility.
This Is for Everyone, Not Just Salespeople
Every day you’re influencing someone—your kids, your team, your friends, your customers! And your words are your most powerful tool.
How to Start Changing Your Language
- Audit Your Words – Spend a day noticing your language without judgment.
- Reframe in the Moment – Swap limiting phrases for empowering ones.
- Surround Yourself with Accountability – Keep people in your life who will call you out.
The Ripple Effect
When you change your words, people respond differently. Your team trusts you more, your clients feel confident in you, and you feel more capable of achieving your goals. You in turn train your brain towards forward movement, just by changing your language. You influence your mind more than anyone else can.
