Sales Success Isn’t About What You Say — It’s About Who You Are

If you’ve ever dipped your toes into the world of sales — whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out — you’ve probably been told to sharpen your pitch, master your closing techniques, or memorize every last feature of your product or service. But here’s the real truth no one talks about: 

Sales success doesn’t start with your script. It starts with you. 

You’re in sales, no matter what you do — whether you’re a sales rep, running your own business, or just trying to get your kids to eat their veggies. Every day, someone is getting sold on a yes, a no, or a next step. At the heart of it, sales is simply about influence, connection, and moving things forward — and we’re all doing it, all the time. 

I just recorded the very first episode in my new Sales Series on the Make Things Happen Podcast, and I can’t tell you how fired up I am about this topic. Why? Because I’ve been in sales practically my whole life — no joke, my mom tells me I was memorizing their sales presentations when I was just three years old, hiding under the dining table while they worked. I’ve worked as a telemarketer, I’ve been in real estate for over a decade, I’ve trained sales teams — and I’ve learned over and over again that your mindset is the make-or-break factor in your success. 

Forget the Numbers Game — Focus on the Inner Game

Sure, you can make 200 cold calls a day and maybe land a sale or two just by sheer numbers. But that’s not what creates long-term success or fulfillment. What really changes the game is your belief — in yourself, in your product, and in the impact you’re creating for your customers. 

Let’s get real: sales can be tough. You need thick skin. You’ll hear “no” more times than you can count. But if you’ve done the inner work — if you’ve built your foundation of confidence and purpose — rejection won’t crush you. It’ll sharpen you. 

Energy Speaks Louder Than Words

Here’s something I tell every sales rep I work with: your customers can feel your energy. Whether you’re meeting in person, on Zoom, or over the phone, they’ll sense if you’re having an “off” day. You can’t fake belief or enthusiasm — people pick up on it. 

That’s why it’s so important to check in with yourself before you jump into action. Did you just eat a huge lunch and now you’re sluggish? Blast your favorite song, do some movement to change your physiology, maybe some jumping jacks like me, and shake up your energy. Because when you show up with conviction and passion, it makes all the difference. 

Find Your Why — and Reconnect With It Often

If you’re just in sales for the paycheck, let me tell you: you’re going to burn out fast. You need to believe deeply in what you’re offering. What problem are you solving for your customers? How is their life or business better because of what you provide? 

Take a moment today to write down five to ten things that make your product or service amazing — and then write down three to five things that make you an incredible asset to your customers. Maybe it’s your authenticity, your persistence, your genuine care. Whatever it is, own it. That’s your secret sauce. 

Success Is Built on Consistency

Here’s the kicker: mindset work isn’t a “one and done” thing. You don’t go to one seminar or read one book and suddenly you’re set for life. Just like going to the gym, you’ve got to keep working that muscle. Stay consistent, stay intentional, and keep pushing yourself to grow.
